Hue was Vietnam's royal capital under the Nguyen kings, and getting there from Da Nang is half the pleasure. The road climbs over the Hai Van Pass – the mountain border between Hue and Da Nang, and one of the most scenic hillside roads in Vietnam – then drops down past Lap An Lagoon and the long white sand of Lang Co Beach.
In Hue, start at Khai Dinh Tomb, where Eastern art meets Western architecture, and sit down to a 7-dish lunch of Hue cuisine. The afternoon is for the Imperial City – the Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, the Nine Dynastic Urns – and Thien Mu Pagoda before the drive back south.
