Two very different kinds of sacred place, one day. The morning belongs to Da Nang: the giant Lady Buddha on Monkey Mountain, then the Marble Mountains, with their stone carvers, 19th-century pagodas and the deep, legend-filled Am Phu Cave. Lunch is a bowl of mi Quang.
In the afternoon the road leads inland to My Son, the UNESCO-listed sanctuary of the ancient Champa kingdom, where brick temples stand in a green valley and Apsara dancers perform among the ruins.
How the day ends depends on where you start. From Hoi An, you drift home on the Thu Bon River at sunset with a banh mi in hand. From Da Nang, you learn to make rice paper at a local house and sit down to a family-style dinner before the drive back.
