Ninh Binh 2 Days: Bai Dinh, Trang An, Tam Coc & Mua Cave

Two unhurried days in Ninh Binh: Bai Dinh Pagoda and the caves of Trang An, a night in a pool bungalow at Trang An Holiday Retreat, then Hoa Lu, Tam Coc by boat and the Mua Cave summit.

Some places deserve more than a day trip. On day one, Bai Dinh's bronze bells and stone Arhats give way to Trang An, where a boat carries you for around two and a half hours through Sang, Toi, Ba Giot and Nau Ruou caves.

By five you're at Trang An Holiday Retreat, with time to swim before dinner – and a slow morning to explore the neighbourhood after breakfast.

Day two belongs to Hoa Lu's royal temples, a boat ride through Tam Coc's 'Ha Long Bay on land' and the climb up Mua Cave, before the drive back to your hotel in Hanoi.

    Day 1: Bai Dinh – Trang An

    7:00–7:50: your guide and driver pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter for the transfer to Ninh Binh. Around 9:15 there is a 15–20-minute break to stretch your legs, use the facilities or have a quick snack.

    10:30: Bai Dinh Pagoda, one of the most famous pagodas in Vietnam and known for many Asian and Vietnamese records. See the 500 stone statues of Arhats, the bell tower with its 27-ton and 36-ton bronze bells and the golden statue of the Goddess of Mercy. An electric car takes you in and out, both ways.

    12:00: lunch of Ninh Binh specialities in the private area of Trang An Holiday Retreat; a vegetarian option is available.

    13:30: Trang An, with its majestic limestone cliffs, mysterious yet inviting caves and deserted green fields. A boat trip of around 2.5 hours takes you through the cave complex: Sang Cave, Toi Cave, Ba Giot Cave and Nau Ruou Cave.

    17:00: check in at Trang An Holiday Retreat, then free time to relax or swim.

    19:00: dinner and overnight at the retreat. Your guide is off duty until the next morning.

    Tag 2

    Day 2: Hoa Lu – Tam Coc – Mua Cave

    Morning: breakfast at the retreat, then free time to explore the neighbourhood.

    10:00: Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam during the Dinh and Le dynasties. Visit the temples of the Dinh and Le kings and learn about the history and culture of the region.

    12:00: lunch with great local cuisine.

    13:00: Tam Coc, also known as the 'Ha Long Bay on land', famous for its limestone karsts and winding waterways, which you explore by boat – admiring the scenery and learning about the local way of life along the way.

    15:30: hike more than 500 steps up Mua Cave (Mua means 'dance') to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain, with a panorama over Ninh Binh and the Ngo Dong River.

    16:30: back on the bus to Hanoi, arriving at your hotel around 19:00. End of tour.
