Ninh Binh's 'Ha Long Bay on land' and the real Ha Long Bay in two days: Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave, a night in a pool bungalow, then a day on a 5-star cruise.

Day one is Ninh Binh at its best: the royal temples of Hoa Lu, the river caves of Tam Coc and the climb up Mua Cave for a view over the whole valley.

You sleep in a bungalow with a pool at Trang An Holiday Retreat.

On day two the limestone goes out to sea. In Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thousands of islands rise from the water, and you spend the day among them aboard a 5-star cruise.

    Day 1: Hoa Lu – Tam Coc – Mua Cave

    Pick-up in Hanoi's Old Quarter and the drive south to Ninh Binh by shuttle bus or limousine, with drinking water on board. First, Hoa Lu – Vietnam's capital in the 10th century under the Dinh and Le dynasties – and the temples of its kings. After a premium buffet lunch at Trang An Eco Restaurant, continue to Tam Coc, the 'Ha Long Bay on land', where the Ngo Dong River winds through three caves between rice fields and cliffs. Then climb more than 500 steps at Mua Cave to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain for a panorama over Ninh Binh. Sport bicycles are provided, and a raincoat or conical hat depending on the weather. The day ends at Trang An Holiday Retreat, where you check in to a bungalow with a pool.
