Pavilion on emerald water beneath Trang An karst peaks
Destinations

Ninh Binh

Ha Long Bay on land: rice fields, rivers and limestone peaks.

Ninh Binh is often called 'Ha Long Bay on land': limestone peaks rise from rice fields and slow rivers wind through caves beneath them. The Trang An Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and nearby Hoa Lu was Vietnam's capital in the 10th century.

Here you travel by small rowing boat, by bicycle along the paddies and on foot up the stone steps of Hang Mua for a view over the whole valley.

Best time to go

Late May to early June brings golden rice around Tam Coc; spring and autumn are generally mild and pleasant, while summer is hot and humid.

What it feels like

  • Drifting by rowing boat through cool limestone caves
  • Cycling between rice paddies and karst peaks
  • Catching your breath at the top of Hang Mua

A local's tip

The rowers in Trang An and Tam Coc often paddle with their feet – watch for it, it is a local skill as much as a way to rest the arms.
