High in the Hoang Lien Son range, Sapa looks out over terraced rice fields that step down the Muong Hoa Valley, home to Hmong, Dao and other ethnic communities. Above it all rises Fansipan, at 3,143 m the highest peak in Indochina.
The best way to see it is on foot: trails lead from town down to villages like Cat Cat, Lao Chai and Ta Van, past rice paddies, streams and wooden houses.
Best time to go
September brings golden rice terraces before harvest, and spring (March–May) is mild and green; summer is the rainy season, and winters can be cold, with occasional frost or snow on the high peaks.
What it feels like
- Walking down through terraced rice fields
- Cool mountain air and drifting cloud
- Meeting village life in the Muong Hoa Valley
A local's tip
Mountain weather changes fast: bring a warm layer and a rain jacket in any season, and shoes with a good grip for muddy trails.
